To introduce compound words I created these chicks:
The two words on the wings really helped to reinforce the concept of there being two smaller words that make up the larger compound word. I covered up the compound word and had students read the two smaller words and put them together. Then I uncovered the compound word and we checked their answer. I placed the chicks on the back table for the students to look at in their free time after we finished. They were a good visual for students who were struggling with the concept I would have them picture the chick, it worked!
