To introduce compound words I created these chicks:
The two words on the wings really helped to reinforce the concept of there being two smaller words that make up the larger compound word. I covered up the compound word and had students read the two smaller words and put them together. Then I uncovered the compound word and we checked their answer. I placed the chicks on the back table for the students to look at in their free time after we finished. They were a good visual for students who were struggling with the concept I would have them picture the chick, it worked!

Piggy Bank Math
After learning about all the coins and their value I created these Piggy Banks to practice adding different sums of money. There are four quarters, ten dimes, ten nickels, and twenty pennies. I also made baggies of various amounts of money, all less than a dollar. The students have to select an amount of money then using the coins provided show that same amount of money. This was created to provide extra practice to the students with counting coins. Their goal is show the amount using the least amount of coins. The students work with a partner to check their work. This has also become a favorite activity in the room. The only problem is the glue isn't sticking real well, does anyone have any suggestions?
Word Family Eggs
We had been discussing word families right before Spring Break. To review our word families I created word family eggs. I placed the eggs in a bucket back at the table for the students to work at during their free time. This became a favorite activity of the students.
Human Clock
We have been talking about telling time. To practice this skill we made a human clock. I printed off the numbers 1-12. Students took turns holding the numbers on the clock. Two students were the clock hands, the minute hand layed and placed their hands above their head and the hour hand layed with their hands down at their side. Two additional students called out the times, one student was in charge of the hour and the other in charge of the minutes. Any additional students took turns writing the time in digital notation on their white boards. We took turns with each of the roles. The students really enjoyed this activity.
Honey Bees
In the classroom I am in we use a Ohio Reading Street book series. One of our stories was Honey Bees. We made these bees to go with our story. Each child got to make thier own bee to fit thier personality. One student selected a piece of scrapbook paper to make our queen bee. We then as a class compared how people and bees are alike and different. This hung in the back of the classroom for an extended period of time. The students really enjoyed this project.
